TANCORD (1998) Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Katani Limited. It has its registered offices within Katani House in Tanga City. The factory and the company’s operations are based at Ngomeni Village in Muheza District, 26 kilometres from Tanga City, which has the second largest port in Tanzania. The factory is located about 1 km off the Tanga - Dar es Salaam/Arusha highway. Its location is strategic, enabling the factory to absorb the fibre from Katani Limited and other sisal estates. It is well served by rail and road into the hinterland.
The factory was first established in 1965 by the Nooran family. In 1967 it was nationalised and placed under the Tanzania Sisal Corporation until 1997 when, in implementation of the national privatisation policy, it was acquired by Katani Limited.
The company manufactures various products such as twines, ropes and woven products: 1. Agricultural and packing twines with runnage ranging from 120 to 300 m per kg 2. Various sizes of sisal ropes with diameters ranging from 6 mm to 48 mm 3. Fine yarns, runnage 300 to 900 m per kg 4. Carpets, buffing cloth and geo-textiles with width of 65 to 400 cm
The factory has a total capacity of producing 10,000 tons of yarns or about 7,500 tons for finer yarns per year.
The mill relies up to 75% of its supplies of fibre on the sisal estates owned by Katani Limited and 25% on the smallholder scheme under development by Oxfam GB and Katani Limited in Kishapu District of Shinyanga Region.
About 75 percent of the company’s products are sold to Kenya and Uganda in the East African Community, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa. Even some of the products sold locally end up being exported to Rwanda and Burundi.
The market for sisal fibre woven products is growing. The company intends to increase production of buffing cloth to meet the growing demand for polishing materials for steel and furniture in industrialising countries.
